Hybrid Cars – All the Things You Wanted to Know About Radiation and Future Cars
There are numerous types of cars out there. So, if you plan on moving to hybrid cars, then there are some things you should consider.
Whereas typical cars use diesel or gasoline as a power source, hybrids also have a battery and electric motor. They can also be fueled like ordinary cars. Consequently, they have a better fuel efficiency than usual cars.Sometimes, hybrids have rechargeable batteries, and you can drive them for longer before switching to diesel or gasoline. By using a hybrid car, you save more money than you’d usually spend with conventional cars.
However, are they good for the environment? Here are some things you should know about the future cars and radiation.
How do they work?
As mentioned, hybrid cars have a special feature. They have a battery and electric motor, and can also run on gasoline or diesel. Having an electric motor powered by battery increases the hybrid’s fuel efficiency. Moreover, these cars have a lot of unique features.
For instance, hybrid cars have the feature of regenerative braking. Basically, this feature allows some of the vehicle’s kinetic energy to be captured. It is then turned into electricity that can be stored in the batteries. Meanwhile, typical cars only use the friction brakes to slow down. The kinetic energy is dissipated as heat.
The electricity stored by hybrid cars can be used to later accelerate the vehicle and run the car’s motor.
The electric engine also lets the engine design be more effective. This feature of power assist reduces demands on the gasoline engine of a hybrid. As a result, it can be operated much more efficiently. The gasoline engine doesn’t produce as much power. However, if it’s combined with electric motors, its power can be significantly bigger than that of a normal car.
The car also has a feature that allows it to turn off the normal engine if the vehicle is stopped. This helps you save fuel. Moreover, the battery offers the car enough energy for accessories like air conditioner while the car is idle. This can happen when, for example, you wait at the traffic lights. The electric motor can start the car and make it move again. The engine might offer even more power for acceleration when needed.
Also, some hybrid cars have this feature that allows you to drive the car on electricity only while using less fuel. If a hybrid vehicle can’t be plugged in, then this feature is only used at startup and low speeds. Also, it allows engine powered by diesel or gas to operate at much higher speeds when it’s efficient.
Hybrids that can entirely drive on electricity for long distances at high speeds are usually plug-in hybrid vehicles with larger motors and batteries.
What are the differences between electric vehicles and hybrids?
As expected, there are some differences between hybrid and electric vehicles.
For example, hybrid vehicles that don’t have the option of being recharged from an outlet aren’t usually considered electric vehicles. They rely on diesel or gasoline, as that’s where they get their energy from. Plug-in hybrids, however, are considered electric vehicles. They are in the same boat as hydrogen fuel cell vehicles and battery electric vehicles.
Hydrogen fuel cell cars convert the stored hydrogen gas into electricity using a fuel cell, thus powering the battery and electric motor. These models are not yet so numerous on the market, but they are a great alternative to trucks and cars. The reason is the fact that they have reduced global warming emissions and tailpipe emissions. Additionally, they can be refueled similarly to gasoline vehicles, at the filling stations.
Battery electric vehicles can only use a battery and electric motor. Usually, battery electric cars are cheaper to fuel, because they don’t require diesel or gas. Therefore, they are a better alternative from this point of view.
Are there any risks to using hybrid vehicles?
The higher the number of electronics around us, the worse. Future cars pose a dangerous threat to us, because of all the radiations they emit. This is because newer models come with even more electronics. Owning a hybrid or electric car means that there is an even bigger threat for you.
According to studies, hybrid vehicles emit low-frequency electromagnetic fields. Because of this, the electromagnetic fields emitted by these vehicles may pose a cancer threat to people driving them.
Also, if you’re inside a car, the car’s metal casing keeps the radiation trapped. Consequently, it magnifies the amount of radiation and makes it even more dangerous.
Radiation from electronics can have a lot of effects. For example, some symptoms or issues you could experience are:
- Heart Disease
- Depression or anxiety
- Muscle pain
What causes radiation in cars?
Some of the electronics causing radiation in cars are:
- Electric engines – Many cars have these small electric engines that control certain things. They usually control wiper blades or windows. These engines may emit radiation.
- Battery – Usually, when a car changes currents, like at the start of the vehicle, batteries might emit a powerful temporary field of DC voltage. This can affect some people, especially if they are EMF sensitive.
- Computer system – Computer systems will emit a large amount of radiation most of the times.
- Alarm systems – Because of the radio waves they utilize, alarm systems are very likely to produce EMF radiations.
- Alternator – This one can produce a big amount of radiation, as it has to fit the car’s needs. It’s found on the far side of the engine compartment.
- Relay Switches – Switches can create magnetic field radiation when turning on the hazard lights, pressing the brake and other actions.
Although hybrid cars seem a great alternative because of all the features they come with, they emit EMF radiation and could have negative effects on our health. So, it’s better to know the risks before purchasing a hybrid car.
